GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
HONGKONG, 29th. May, 1912.
Sir,
I have the honour to inform you that it was
recently pointed out by the owner of New Kowloon Inland Lots Nos.
39 and 51 that before building operations on the first-mentioned
lot could be proceeded with, it would be necessary to remove the
T'in Hau Temple, which is partly built upon a large rock extending
on to Lot No. 39. Moreover the rock cannot be removed without
seriously damaging the temple.
2.
I attach a plan on which the temple is shown
coloured blue and, as it must be removed, I propose that the lot
hetched in red (area 1,440 square feet) should be allotted for its
reconstruction. The area of the proposed lot is much in excess of
the existing site, but this is largely due to the depth of the
block (72 feet) in which it is situated and there would be no ob-
-ject in curtailing it as it would only lead to irregularity.
3.
The Chinese community of Shamshuipo has been
consulted by the Registrar-General who reports that they are not
satisfied with the site offered, but ask for the whole block (area
5,184 square feet) adjoining Inland Lot No. 51. As an inducement
to Government to grant this area the Chinese offer to build a
dispensary as well as a temple. Mr. A. W. Brewin informed Sir F.D. Lugard that the only chance of getting a dispensary built in this locality was to build it as part of a temple, for otherwise the
necessary funds cannot be raised. You will see, however, that the
